If it's got anything to do with blues, Taj Mahal has probably tried it. Scattered around on his many records, you'll find many country blues tracks where he plays the six-stringed guitar-banjo (possibly other banjo types as well, although I don't think so). His banjo style is similar to his dobro style, and deeply rooted in the good old delta blues tradition. Some of Taj Mahal's banjo recordings:
