Although the zither-banjo is often regarded as the "British banjo" it was actually invented and first used in the USA. It has a nice tone, slightly softer than a common banjo. You probably wouldn't want to use it for down-to-earth county blues, but don't rule it out completely! If you ever get your hands on one, try it and see what you think. At least it's a fun instrument to play!
