The guitar-banjo has six strings and is usually tuned like a guitar. This has made it popular among guitarists who doubles on the banjo, and that again - of course - means it's tended to be frowned upon by "real" banjoists.

But despite it's reputation, the guitar-banjo is a serious instrument on its own and can be used very effectively. It was used a lot by pre-war jazz banjoists and many of the classical jass recordings from that time was actually done with a guitar-banjo, not with a tenor as is usually assumed.

There's an interesting page comparing the five- and sixstringed banjos at the Folk of the wood site.

Blues-influenced guitar-banjoists include:

Cyr, Johnny St.
Mahal, Taj
