The upright bass banjo was the bass instrument of the old banjo orchestras. It'sa big four-stringed banjo, similar in size and tuning to a double bass.

There has been many different approaches to making a bass variant of the banjo over the years. The early bass banjos tended to be "double bass style" instruments, upright basses with a huge body. Modern bass banjos are usually more like a bass guitar.
